I’m going to tell you a Fairy story.

Fairy stories are a magical part of childhood and adulthood if you have your own children.

I’m sure you all had your own version of the books from Claires little library.

Once upon a time there was a wonderous pregnant Fairy named Ellette.

Ellette came from Mad Marvellous Things, a strange village in the middle of an enchanted forest.

Ellette needed to travel to a safer place to have her baby.

One day Ellette met a fairy that was full of Blissful hearts galore, she sang with a beautiful voice and informed Ellette that she would be meeting a stranger on her travels and that she must beware.

Ellette met many strange creatures as she walked out of the forest and onto the kids bee happy sands. A mystical desert.

She had nothing to fear here so she carried on.

There was a castle at the edge of the desert with a stunning rainbow. This charmed place was Peerie breeks.

This is where Ellette met Sophia the unicorn. She said that she would meet many fairies along the way, most of them friendly, that would do her no harm.

Some of the fairies were very shy and quiet and carried Janes wax melts, candles and crystals with them to guard from evil spirits.

and other fairies that she met on her travels said they were storybook creations by Ceri which made no sense at all to Ellette.

Maybe she had baby brain already 😉

Ellette came across Dawns Decorations, a bewitched shop in a far off village.

Ellette touched the believe unicorn and was suddenly transported through a portal

to JJ Felt Crafty, a dreamy world in another realm.  A soft world which was very pleasant on her tired feet.

Ellette met Meranda the mermaid.

Meranda showed Ellette a symbol. A unicorn on a shield.

She told her that this unicorn would protect her and all she needed to do was to ask the crafty camper for help when she needed it.

So Ellette walked on.

She came across a mesmerizing character dressed in black. Was this who she had been warned about?

This hypnotising Queen looked into Ellette’s eyes. She was Taylor the Terrified.

Taylor Mayde Ellette fall to the ground.

But that’s when she saw it.

A unicorn symbol on the tree next to her.

There was some small words etched next to it. Ellette shouted out loud…. Kellys Kids Designs

All of a sudden there were unicorns swooping all around.

Magic sparks shot through the air and swept Taylor away.

The magic that she saw was VersaStyle by Laura. A most powerful spell performed by Laura lady of the lake.

Laura had saved Ellette and her unborn baby.

She took her safely to a hidden village high up on mountain where the pretty paper people lived.

A land called More than just Cards.

Witch, Wizard or Warlock – which one are you?

An awesome personal blog by Emily in preparation for the I believe in FairyTales Online Shopping Event

I love this time of year, autumn – the days are growing shorter, but the sun still has a nice heat when it shines. It is the time when you are bringing in the harvest, saying thanks for what nature has provided and consolidating and stockpiling the jams and chutneys ready for the winter months. The trees are starting to get their autumn colours too and this season’s colour will be in full swing soon!

The nights are definitely drawing in, so a nice shawl around the shoulders in the evening does wonders to stave off that slight chill that is starting to creep in.

Being a wiccan I love being at one with nature and trying to live as sustainably and responsibly as I possibly can (although it is not always easy) and I love going to festivals (especially fairy festivals – but I am more like the tubby one from Sleeping Beauty – oh, what was her name – yes Merryweather – that is definitely me, but in pink!)

Normally I don’t talk about my way of life as lots of folks get scared when they hear anything they think or feel is satanical or evil in any way, shape or form. Well – lets get it out there as my favourite time of the year is almost upon us – Halloween. I’m a witch – there, it’s said. Now we can get to the parts where I dispel some fears, I hope.
No, no, no – I can see you are now thinking I am like the old hag out of the Disney films or from Hocus Pocus and have buck teeth, a pointy nose and a wart – oh yes, don’t forget the wart – or maybe I am green.

Well, I am sorry to disappoint, I am nothing like those listed above. I am a plain Jane, honest, hardworking, down to earth, friendly girl next door, who has made a conscious decision to do no harm – yes, you heard right – do no harm.

From the Witches Rede “And it harm none, do as ye will” and that is exactly how I try to live – to do no harm.

I don’t keep goats, snakes, chickens (well actually I do have two pet hens called Emmy & Fizz – they are about 10 years old now) and two dogs (one of which loves magick. I don’t make sacrifices, I don’t drink blood or eat the body parts of my unfortunate victims and I certainly don’t try to make someone do something against their will.
Things I do do – I celebrate nature. I try to nurture the earth. I believe in duality (the Lord and Lady), I believe in balance and karma. I try to be kind, gentle and understanding. I try to only take what I need and try to give back more than I take.

So why do I love Halloween, well it’s the only time I can get dressed up in true witch style and dig out those thick, black heavy cloaks, wear the pointy hats, grab my broomstick, steal away unsuspecting children, stir the cauldron and ride out across the moon soaked sky (and by the way this year Halloween will have its very own full moon – fantastic!)

Actually, Halloween is better known in the witchy circle as Samhain (pronounced Sowen) and in reality it is our New Year – which is why we like a good old party. It is also the time when the veil between the living and those who have passed over is at its thinnest.

It is a time for remembering our loved ones and our ancestors (All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day are based upon Samhain – in fact all of our well known holidays are based upon pagan events – this was done to bring us unruly and unholy pagans in line with the new ways of thinking – by placing the holidays at similar times then one can assimilate much more easily, – for example Yule 21st December/Christmas 25th December, Beltane 1st May/May Day, Litha/Midsommers Day).

Sorry, going off on a tangent again – Samhain:
1. Thick heavy cloak – tick – of course, we want to stay nice and toasty on these cold chilly nights (and I have two – a midnight blue one and a pink one).
2. Pointy Hat – tick – to help channel our magical workings into a single point or cone of power and focus it/harness it/draw it directly in to our bodies.
3. Broomstick – tick – to sweep away all the negativity and bad emotions.
4. Cauldron – tick – to create wonderful potions (normally some sort of meade) so we can drink and toast our loved ones/ancestors.
5. Flying broomstick – kinda – witches can’t fly, but back in the day we were great at creating a potion called “flying ointment” which allowed one to have an out of body/astral projection type of experience. I have never tried said potion because of its application – can I just say that Ann Summers was not the first to create an artificial aid – enough said.
So, now you know I am a witch and you have had time to assimilate that tasty morsel of gossip, the endless questions can begin:
1. Are you a white witch? – Nope, no such thing. A witch is a witch and as I mentioned before tries to do no harm so therefore just a witch, not a white witch, good witch or a bad witch. If I was bad, then I would be a warlock. Those are the only two terms. Witch = good. Warlock = bad.
2. Are you a devil worshiper? – Nope. Hopefully already covered earlier with the sacrifices and stuff but just to clarify witches don’t believe in the devil so how can we worship him/her?
3. Are you a tree hugging hippie? – Oh heck yes, most definitely!
I remember going to a christening once, in a church – yes, we are not evil remember, we can enter and if you look at some of the older churches, you will see a lot of pagan/wiccan iconography – well, my at the time in-laws were not happy about their unworthy daughter-in-law’s choice of religion and made it very well known that there was a witch in the building and how surprised they were that I had not been smote to ash by their almighty and righteous God.
Now here comes the charmer – the priest – he was lovely and extremely knowledgeable on various forms of religion – actually heard all this muttering and thought he would dispel a few untruths too. He could see my discomfort (oh not because of what they were saying, but because it was detracting from what we were here to do and that was to bless a beautiful baby recently delivered to this wonderful world). So anyway, he asked the in-laws to shut up until the christening was over and then he would address the witch issue.
Oh, the faces the in-laws pulled were a picture. They were so smug and happy that I was going to be hung, drawn and quartered and their son delivered from satan’s clutches.
What the priest actually did was to thank me for coming to help bless this child. It was his honour to have someone from a different and older religion attend and then he proceeded to spend the next three hours discussing paganism and wicca and how it was fascinating and that he was so grateful modern religion drew inspiration from these.

Ohhhh, the looks on their faces was priceless.

So, now I am going to turn this piece over to one of my favourite characters ever created, because I am pretty sure 99% of us know this one and have heard a famous saying “You’re a Wizard Harry” – er, no.

Sorry to dispel the myth and it works great for the movies and books but no, no, no, no and no again.

Harry Potter is a thumping good old-fashioned witch, just like Hermione, Professor McGonagall, Madam Hooch, Professor Trelawny, Cho Chang, Ginny, Mrs Weasley and Fleur to name a few.

So that makes Voldemort, Ron, Neville, Fred and George, Professor Dumbledore, Snape, Hagrid, Malfoy and all the other male characters witches too- right? Nope, only the ones who try not to harm for their own gain, so the Weasleys, Neville, Dumbledore, Slughorn, Hagrid even Snape, but not Voldemort, Malfoy, Bartie Crouch Jnr. In fact they fall in the category of Warlock and add Bellatrix LeStrange and Professor Umbridge to the list of Warlock too.

Now, can you imagine Hagrid saying “You’re a Witch, Harry”.

Doesn’t have the same ring to it does it?

The term wizard is a relatively modern invention thought up, I believe, for modern literature and filmography as, at the time, people felt uncomfortable with the term witch and it would be better to come up with a completely new saying that portrayed good and bad without going down the route of religion.

So, differences between modern religion and paganism/wicca – there are lots and lots but I’m not going to list them all as we would be here for ever!

The ones are that I believe in duality, Gods and Goddesses, Yin and Ylang, Lord and Lady – for you cannot have balance without both. Satan does not exist in my understanding of religion. I don’t believe in hell.

I believe that when we die, we nourish the earth and our spirit goes to rest and then when it is time, we are re-born. I believe that we are sent back numerous times until you finally pass the tests you were meant to pass, in my case, that test is balance – I have not yet learnt that art so I suspect I will be returned to try again later.

Have you ever heard the term “old soul”? This is when you look at someone you get the impression they are wise beyond their years as if they have been here forever – I believe they have, just in different bodies at different time periods. There are interesting facts on past life regression that are fascinating.

Finally, I asked a question right at the start – “Witch, Wizard or Warlock – Which one are you?”.
Have you made up your mind which one you are?
Don’t forget a Wizard is fictional so that leaves Witch or Warlock. To give you a little prompt, we are all one or the other – Witch or Warlock – and the reason I say this is quite simple. To be a Witch or Warlock you must be a spellcaster and each and everyone one of us is a spellcaster.
In it’s most simplistic form, a spell is a wish or intention straight from one’s heart/head, that is either delivered out loud or in silence and the most common form of a wish or intention is a prayer.
Have you ever said or thought something like “I wish those kids would shut up” or “I don’t know what to do, please help me” or “Drive safely” or “Thank you for providing the food we are about to eat”. All of these are spells – as soon as you think it, or say it, it is out there, in the universe, waiting to be acted upon in some way or another, so ask yourself again, are you a Witch or Warlock.

Coming soon!

Fairy tales have been around for years and years – Beauty And The Beast and Rumpelstiltskin are said to be over 4,000 years old! They don’t age and are loved by people of all ages. What’s not to love when there are heroes, villains and magic involved?

During our childhood years they teach morals and values in a fun way. While stirring the imagination of little ones, they explained the mysteries of the world: birth, death, the seasons, day and night, and capture the hopes and dreams of humanity. They also tell us of overcoming adversity, rising from rags to riches, and the benefits of courage.

Characters come across difficult problems which are often solved by enchantment or magic. This could be the waving of a wand, granting three wishes, wearing a magic ring, repeating a charm or spell. The ending is always a happy one, with good overcoming evil. That doesn’t mean there isn’t peril or hardship along the way though.

We have seen lots of traditional fairy tales on the big screen dramas thanks to the likes of Disney etc. That doesn’t stop us loving the actual story books. They’re a great way to wind down and to snuggle up in bed to. I know as a mum, I’m enjoying re-living my childhood by reading them to Littleman.

This magic isn’t limited to bedtime though. Go for a stroll through the park or woodlands, and you’ll be sure to find a fairy door. They act as a magical portal between our world and the fairy realm. Fairies have been travelling to and fro from the fairy realm to ours for centuries, with doors been introduced to more places to encourage the fairies to move in and interact with children.

I found this link which lists fairy trails across the country. Be sure to see if there’s one near you.

There has been much debate about the existence of fairies, for example the Cottingley Fairies (also known as the Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden). What started off as two cousins playing a prank on their family, led to a worldwide debate about the existence of fairies after the photos were published in all the newspapers. This occurred towards the end of World War I when understandably people were eager to find comfort and believe in a better world. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini and other celebrities of the time got involved in the investigation behind these photos. Over time, the fairies were forgotten about as people went about their daily lives. It wasn’t until some 60 years later that the truth came out

There are plenty of adults who still enjoy stories of magic, fairies and witches etc. They offer an escape from reality. This can be seen with dramas such as Carnival Row and Once Upon a Time.

One of the most famous fairies has to be Tinker Bell from J.M.Barrie’s Peter Pan. Although she was mischievous, she always had Peter’s best interests at heart. These mystical creatures are much loved, and offer comfort. In the words of Peter Pan, ‘I do believe in fairies, I do, I do.’

Safari From Home

The 4th October sees the return of World Animal Day. This idea started back in 1925 in Germany as a way to improve the welfare of animals, officially taking off in 1931. This particular day of the year was chosen as it coincides with the day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology, including animals. Legend has it that Saint Francis was able to talk to animals and even tamed a wild wolf – the original Dr Doolittle!!

To mark the occasion, the lovely Kelly at KLOnlineShoppingEvents is hosting a Safari themed market evening. The perfect opportunity to grab yourself all things animal related, and goodies from small businesses. Be sure to sign up to the Facebook/and this webpage to see the latest about sellers and sneak peeks in the run up to this event. All from the comfort of your own home too. I tend to get myself comfy on the sofa in my pj’s with something to munch on hehe.

Safari can be defined as an overland journey to observe and photograph wildlife, as well as hiking and sightseeing. This is definitely on my bucket list – to be truly immersed in nature and your surroundings, seeing wildlife in their natural environment. This sounds like the greatest adventure of all to me! I assume it would be one of those experiences you wish you could relive for the first time over and over again. Oh well, maybe one day!

When we think of safari we normally think of the ‘Big Five’ – these are the Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo. Originally seen as the most dangerous, therefore, trophies for hunters and poachers, but now seen as the most desirable to be observed. At a safe distance obviously, I know I wouldn’t want to take any of these on!!

For those of us stuck in the UK (pretty much all of us thanks to Covid lol), here’s a few suggestions for Safari Parks across the country. I can highly recommend West Midlands Safari Park, and Longleat is on my list of places to go to! Wildlife parks and zoos have an obligation to support and encourage research which will improve the welfare of captive animals. In addition, research at captive animal collections can generate knowledge on topics such as animal behaviour, physiology and reproduction. This knowledge can ultimately be used to assist species conservation.

One of my friends also introduced me to Zooniverse. This is a great way to enjoy the safari from the comfort of your own home. They have lots of Projects run by scientists and ecologists, and they need your help!! They have thousands of photos from trial cameras. Your task is to help identify the animals in the photos, and what they’re up to. You feel like you’re spying on them and it gets quite addictive lol. You see lots of animals, some even in funny poses etc.

Be sure to check it out. There are other projects to on there too relating to other wildlife / habitats across the world.

There are also lots of Wildlife programmes available on the like of BBCiPlayer etc. Why not check out a Sir David Attenborough show educating the nation about all things to do with the environment. He’s a national treasure, who should be wrapped up in cotton wool!!

I used to also watch a show called Meerkat Manor (by Animal Planet), following Flower and her family as they go about their business in the Kalahari Desert. It’s like a soap drama and gets quite addictive!
